Excavators work hard in tough conditions, and summer heat only makes things worse. Overheating is one of the most common – and most preventable – issues faced by heavy equipment operators. When the cooling system fails, productivity drops, repair costs rise, and machine life shortens. Here are the key fixes to keep your excavator running cool.

Check the Radiator and Cooling Fins

Dust, dirt, and debris clog radiator fins over time, blocking airflow and reducing cooling efficiency. Make it a habit to clean the radiator daily with compressed air or a pressure washer – but always follow the manufacturer's recommended pressure settings to avoid damaging the fins. Inspect for bent or damaged fins and straighten them carefully with a fin comb.

Inspect the Coolant Level and Mixture

Low coolant level or incorrect coolant mixture is a leading cause of overheating. Ensure the coolant is filled to the proper level and mixed at the correct ratio – typically 50:50 antifreeze and water for most excavators. Check for leaks in hoses, clamps, and the water pump. Replace old coolant according to the maintenance schedule, as degraded coolant loses its heat-transfer properties.

Clean or Replace the Hydraulic Oil Cooler

The hydraulic system generates significant heat during operation. A clogged hydraulic oil cooler reduces heat dissipation and causes the entire machine to run hotter. Clean the cooler core regularly and replace it if fins are severely corroded or damaged.

Check the Fan and Belt Tension

A loose or worn fan belt slips, reducing fan speed and airflow through the radiator. Inspect belt tension and condition – replace if cracked or glazed. Also check that the fan itself is not damaged and is securely mounted.

Monitor Operating Habits

Sometimes the fix is as simple as adjusting how the machine is used. Avoid continuous high-load operation without breaks. When working in extreme heat, give the excavator short rest periods to allow the cooling system to catch up.
